Dong In Kim

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I am very delighted to welcome you to the IEEE International Conference on Communications 2022 (ICC 2022) in Seoul, Korea. We had the privilege of hosting ICC in Seoul in 2005, for the first time in Asia, in the long history of this flagship conference of the IEEE Communications Society since 1965. Again in Seoul, the heart of the Korean peninsula, we extend our hearty welcome to you, as our special guests, to experience the warmth and beauty of Korea.

As the global pandemic continues to shift dynamically, we have eventually decided to change the originally planned face-to-face conference to the hybrid conference, in order to make a successful and safe event for all conference participants both from onsite and remote. Along with the 2-day Virtual Program of Tutorials and Workshops, the 3-day In-person Conference Program features two Special Workshops in the emerging areas of wireless communications research, such as Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) and 6G, to gather all world-renowned speakers from industry and academia to give presentations on their latest research works.

Our theme is “Intelligent Connectivity for Smart World” and we plan to go above and beyond your expectations. Our 2022 conference vision is to discuss important future communication issues, share ideas and information, and accelerate innovation. More importantly we will spread the latest research results on communications and networking around the world. On this road, a newly planned Demo Competition will be held at venue COEX and also through virtual participation via the virtual platform of Gather.Town. The demo session will offer an excellent way to showcase tangible results of the most recent and innovative implementation of wireless communications and networking.

To enhance the interaction with industry, ICC 2022 conference team has made tremendous effort in organizing the attractive Industry Programs, comprised of 18 Industry Presentations/Panels, and 3 Executive Forums featuring 8 Industry Keynotes, in the following areas:

  • Global Trend & Future Plan on 5G Vertical Industry Convergence
  • Opportunities & Challenges for Future 6G Wireless
  • Roll-out Vision for Digital Transformation and Industry 4.0 Based on 5G

In close collaboration with world leading companies, such as Samsung, LGE, Huawei, Qualcomm, Ericsson, ZTE, and ETRI, which are also sponsoring IEEE ICC 2022, all speakers participating in the industry programs are invited to represent the regions equally, thus enhancing the diversity. In this endeavor, we shed light on the new initiative and paradigm shift towards 6G which will bring up AI-Native Wireless Communications, Wireless Semantic Communications, and Human-Machine-Intelligence, leading to our theme (Intelligent Connectivity) for ICC 2022. To highlight the vision of ICC 2022, and also to have a balanced view of such paradigm shift, the following 8 esteemed Plenary Keynote speakers are invited from industry and academia:

Yonina Eldar from Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel; Sunghyun Choi from Samsung Research; Mung Chiang from Purdue University, USA; Byoung-Hoon Kim from LG Electronics; Merouane Debbah from Technology Innovation Institute, UAE; John E. Smee from Qualcomm, USA; Ruyue YN Li from ZTE, China; and Peiying Zhu from Huawei, Canada.

I would like to thank many people who made their indelible contributions for the success of this flagship conference. First of all, our sincere thanks should go to authors, keynote speakers, presenters, all volunteers involved, and our Technical, Workshop, Tutorial, and Demo Program Chairs and Track Co-Chairs/Organizers who strived to keep the quality of papers and proposals accepted for ICC 2022 very high. Many thanks to our Industry Program Organizers for their great efforts without which both the excellence and diversity of industry programs would not have been achieved, and to the IF&E Chair/Co-Chairs and Industry Forums Co-Chairs, as well as the ComSoc Treasurer and Project Manager, especially all Members of the GIMS/GITC Committee, for providing valuable guidance and advice. I am deeply indebted and I must express special thanks to the TPC Chair (Ekram Hossain) for his tremendous effort in managing the huge task of the review process of 2,529 conference papers, as well as the Finance Chair, Web Chair, Conference Secretary, Seong, who brought competence and professionalism into its operation.

Last, but not the least, on behalf of the IEEE Communications Society, I would also like to express sincere and special thanks to the co-sponsoring KICS (Yoan Shin, President) and the ICC 2022 PATRONS: Samsung, LGE, Huawei, Qualcomm, TII, ZTE, ETRI, KMW, SOLiD, Ericsson-LG, National Instruments and SUPPORTERS: Korea Tourism Organization and Seoul Metropolitan Government, which have shown a great support to this flagship event.

I hope you will benefit from this top-notch flagship conference and enjoy networking with colleagues from across the globe for future collaboration globally. Especially, the venue COEX is located in the world famous Gangnam district which is the most vibrant part of the city. You can easily explore Seoul. Transportation is clean, safe, and convenient. During the conference, please Taste delicious food, Enjoy the beauty, Touch History, Enjoy Gangnam style, and Experience culture.

Wishing you all to join us to make ICC 2022 a successful and safe event!

Sincerely,

Dong In Kim, FIEEE, FKAST, FNAEK
General (Executive) Chair, IEEE ICC 2022
